Dr. Li's research focuses on creating and implementing ultra-damage-tolerant and multifunctional composite materials for protective and resilient structures, built environments, and energy infrastructure. Her research group engages in interdisciplinary research linking composite materials science, biomimicry, structural mechanics & health monitoring, and industrial ecology to develop and implement new sustainable materials and systems. Research topics include:

  • Development of new multifunctional structural materials and biomimetic materials for damage tolerance, self-healing, sensing and light weightness
  • Engineered Cementitous Composites (ECC), strain-hardening and ductile cementitious composite materials:
    1. micromechanics-based development of new types of ECC materials with strategically tailored characteristics for specific civil, military, or energy infrastructure applications
    2. ECC rheology design for various large-scale processing techniques
    3. characterization of ECC material and structural behavior under combined environmental exposure and mechanical loading conditions,
    4. development of constitutive models
    5. structural engineering with ECC
  • Materials characterization under harsh environment and loading conditions, service life prediction
  • Corrosion in reinforced concrete and metallic structures, accelerated corrosion in repairs
  • Eco-informed material development
  • Assessment of infrastructure sustainability using industrial ecology approaches (e.g., life cycle analysis, material flow analysis, environmental input-output analysis) and complex systems modeling and network analysis methods
