Recharge Rates
Please follow the Instrument Usage Policy to use the instruments. IMRI has a “YOU BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT” policy if you cause damage to any IMRI instrument.
Training certification is required before the use of any IMRI instrument or facility.
The rates for each instrument are detailed below. Off-peak hours are from 8 pm to 8 am on weekdays and anytime on Saturday, Sunday, and national holidays.
IMRI has 3 facility locations: Calit2 Building (1302, 1322, 1301, and 2423), Engineering Hall (1121, 1131, 1141, 1151, and 1150), and Engineering Tower (140).

Consumables & Supplies are charged as cost plus 50%. Usage-related broken parts are billed at the quoted price.
Please note, staff-run projects for all user groups are charged as an instrument rate plus the staff Technical Assistance rate.

Notes to Users
All rates are per hour unless indicated otherwise. Usage time is rounded to the next nearest half hour.
For all transmission electron microscope (TEM) reservations: Users may cancel a reservation for any reason free of charge up to 72 hours before the start of their reserved time. Users who wish to cancel a TEM reservation less than 72 hours before the start of their reserved time must contact the IMRI staff member in charge of the instrument to explain the reason(s) for the cancellation. At the staff member’s discretion (after accounting for legitimate emergencies, etc.), the user may be assessed a late cancellation charge as follows:

Gross/repeated abuse of this rule by a user may result in 100% of the unused time being charged at the full rate for cancellations made less than 72 hours prior to the start of the reservation.
For all non-TEM instrument reservations: Users may cancel a reservation for any reason free of charge from 1 hour after making the reservation to 24 hours before the start of their reserved time. Users who wish to cancel a reservation less than 24 hours before the start of their reserved time must contact the IMRI staff member in charge of that instrument to explain the reason(s) for the cancellation. At the staff member’s discretion (after accounting for legitimate emergencies, etc.), a late cancellation charge of 50% (for first-time offenders) or 100% (for repeat offenders) of all the reserved time that is not used by another user may be assessed.
Users who fail to cancel their reservation and do not show up for their reserved session will be charged 100% of the reserved time at the full rate.
Users who show up but use only most of their reserved time will be charged 50% of any unused time in excess of 0.5 hours. Gross/repeated abuse of this rule may result in 100% of the unused time being charged at the full rate.
Basic/group training has a special recharge rate ($42/hr) for all instruments. During any subsequent required one-on-one training, users must pay for both the instrument time and the staff time, but the first hour of staff time is free of charge.
During normal usage, technical assistance-related charges may be applied if users need assistance for more than 0.5 hours. Please note, staff-run projects for all user groups are charged as on-peak instrument time plus staff time.
No charges will be applied to any reserved session when the instrument is down or under service.
There is no charge for unused time resulting from an instrument malfunction or poor instrument performance (performance below spec), but the user must notify the appropriate IMRI staff person at the time of the instrument problem. Otherwise, normal charges will apply.
Users who cause an instrument to go down (i.e., break, cease to function normally) by failing to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) or other negligence may be charged for the full amount of any unused time in their session.
*Quarterly fee may be applied to IMRI resources which are not listed separately in the recharge rate form. The fee could be exempt if these resources are related to and must be used to operate major instruments in IMRI, for example, CTEM data server.
