Jian-Guo Zheng

Biography

Zheng is an expert in electron microscopy and research facility management. He is a project scientist at the top level at Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI). He is capable of personally operating various types of scanning/transmission electron microscopes and applying different SEM/TEM techniques to solve fundamental and practical problems of bulk/thin film/powder/nanostructured materials ranging from semiconductor, superconductor, magnetic materials, metals, ceramics, catalysts and other inorganic materials. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers in prestigious journals including Science, Nano letters, Advanced Materials and Physics Review Letters, and given numerous talks in international conferences and seminars. These papers have been cited for more than 8000 times. He has been a professional manager of research facilities, especially electron microscopy centers, for more 25 years. He currently serves as the IMRI’s Director of Facilities. He supervises daily facility operation (the user-training/service program, instrument operation and maintenance) and lab personnel, and collaborates with internal and external researchers for SEM/TEM related researches. He initiated and designed facility management systems for effective and efficient management for both instruments and personnel. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopic Society (UK) and member of Microscopy Society of America. He is active member of South California Society for Microscopy and Microanalysis (SCSMM) and has been serving various roles from executive council, vice president to president in SCSMM, a local society affiliated with Microscopy Society of American. He is also an adjunct professor (honor) at several universities. Prior to joining UCI, Zheng was a research assistant professor in materials science and engineering and manager of electron probe instrumentation center (EPIC) at Northwestern University, and had previously been a post-doc researcher under supervision of Prof. John Steeds at University of Bristol, UK, a senior experimental officer in electron microscopy at the University of Liverpool, UK, and an associate professor in physics at Nanjing University, China.

Research

Zheng’s current research focuses on applying different SEM/TEM techniques to solve fundamental and practical problems of bulk/thin film/powder/nanostructured materials ranging from semiconductor, superconductor, magnetic materials, metals, ceramics and catalysts. He may collaborate with researchers in their research program and can serve as PI or Co-PI in research proposals.
